This is admittedly a collector’s piece, for a connoisseur. Melas rugs became known and appreciated in Europe as early as 1700, though its history of weaving goes back at least several centuries prior. Earlier pieces such as this ( as opposed to late 19th century examples ) when very rarely seen show wider outer borders, and a somewhat less formal appearance, revealing tribal influences. The inner field has been the subject of an inferior repair which can be fully restored by arrangement, in Istanbul, by experts for a fairly modest additional cost. Those interested in this important piece ought to consult the definitive Encyclopedia of Antique Carpets ( Moheban ) vol 2 page 380 for indications of pricing for later, and excellent, though less important examples.
