Carlo Scarpa had already designed the Olivetti showroom in Venice in the late 1950s, thus posing as the necessary and shrewd pencil to narrate a visionary business project. Fascinated and impressed by this strongly characterizing project, Dino Gavina also commissioned him to design his showroom in downtown Bologna in 1961. The space designed by the Venetian architect turns out to be not only a splendid showcase but also a manifesto of intentions. The collaboration with Scarpa was long and fruitful from here on, and his crucial presence particularly in the drafting of the Ultrarazionale project: elements and stylistic features dear to rationalism are exaggerated and traditional materials, such as marble, wood, and glass, exaggerated in their thicknesses and dimensions.
