Trained at the Central School of Arts and Crafts in London in the 1940’s Eric is more renowned for his figurative work, often including nudes decorated with ash glazes.
This particular piece is one of a collection of similar shaped cups which he produced using experimental glazes and is marked BEAN & COPPER/CHERRY TAN PINK. The cup has a bell shaped body standing on a narrow round pedestal foot with recessed base. The cup is decorated in matted brown glazes to the outer body with patterned glazes applied to the inside. The cup is signed Eric James Mellon to the base and is dated 2006 with design number 126 and with a running fox mark in gold. The cup retains collection label 326 applied to the body by Mellon.
