This stunning and early example is of wide rounded shape and very finely carved with a continuous wedding scene with various buildings set amidst trees and shrubs with birds and animals and numerous people in various activities and dates from the latter 18th or early 19th century. The scene is set within formal carved borders above and below and the carving extends under the base with animals and birds and a large flower head. A removable cover has been hand cut with an irregular triangular section edge and fits precisely back into the slots left. It too is extensively carved with a geometric and linear patterning and has a central handle, which has been replaced. The gourd is not apparently marked and expect it may indeed have been made as a wedding gift.
A genuine and wonderful example of early South American Folk Art in good condition with a well aged patina.
