Huang Gang was born in Beijing in 1961 during the cultural revolution and studied at the China Central Academy of Art and Design. He was the son of a prominent Chinese art history professor and was inspired by traditional Chinese art and calligraphy. He is recognized internationally and won the Ikuo Hirayama award in 1991 and the Silver Award at the 1st Beijing International Environmental Art Exhibition in 1995. He was also a participant in the 2011 Il Biennale Di Venezia.
